English Construction Co., Inc. is the general contractor for the construction a new 25,000-square-foot, two-story steel and masonry building with a theater, dining hall, bookstore, and staff offices. Extensive landscaping is included in this contract, which includes fire pits and rain gardens. Specific care was taken within the design to connect the new features with an existing quad and fountain area that serves as the trademark photo location on campus. The demolition of the existing Student Center, commissioned in 1970, is also part of this project. The demolition posed considerable challenges due to the location of the old structure in the heart of the Randolph-Macon College campus. Safety of the work site and the student population are a constant concern with this location. Student activities surround all sides of the construction site with the gymnasium, cafeteria and two dorms as immediate neighbors.
