Construction is not what we do…it's who we are.

THE NEWS & ADVANCE – LAST UPDATED AUG 29, 2016

After more than a year of construction, the Kemper Street Bridge is expected to reopen Tuesday.

According to a press release issued by the city Monday, the new Kemper Street Bridge was completed on time and slightly under budget for a cost of $6.2 million.

The old Kemper Street bridge was built in 1968 and suffered from a deteriorating deck and super structure, the release states.

Construction on the new bridge began in March 2015.

The new Kemper Street Bridge is a four lane, single-span structure with a concrete deck. The project includes features such as new traffic signals, sidewalks, street lights and acceleration and deceleration lanes.

Two rain gardens were donated by the project’s contractor, English Construction, as part of the Lynch-burg Expressway Appearance Fund, or LEAF, program.

The bridge is expected to open Tuesday around midday.

The project was funded through revenue sharing with the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT contributed a little more than $3 million.
